What Is Steam Distillation?
Definition
Steam distillation is a method of extracting essential oils by using steam to gently pull volatile aromatic compounds out of plant material. The steam carries these compounds into a condenser, where they cool back into liquid and separate into essential oil and hydrosol.
Why It Matters
Steam distillation is the most common way essential oils are produced because it protects delicate plant aromatics from burning while still releasing them efficiently. This method creates clean, concentrated oils that are suitable for diffuser blends and aromatherapy use.
How Steam Distillation Works
Water is heated to create steam, which passes through a chamber filled with leaves, flowers, woods, or other aromatic plant parts. As the steam moves through the plant material, it ruptures tiny oil sacs, lifts the volatile compounds, then travels into a cooled condenser where the mixture turns back into liquid and naturally separates into an essential oil layer and a water layer called hydrosol.
Examples
Lavender tops distilled to create lavender essential oil.
Peppermint leaves distilled for a clear, cooling mint oil.
Eucalyptus leaves distilled to produce a sharp, airy essential oil.

How Sfumare Uses This Concept
Sfumare works with steam distilled essential oils as core building blocks for diffuser blends, choosing distillations that smell true to the plant and diffuse cleanly in air. Knowing how an oil was distilled helps Sfumare understand its purity, strength, and behavior in a blend, so the final atmosphere in your space feels intentional and refined..
