What Is an Absolute?
Definition
An absolute is a highly concentrated aromatic extract made from plants using solvent based methods instead of distillation. It captures a wider, denser slice of the plant’s fragrance than a typical essential oil, often smelling very close to the living flower or material.
Why It Matters
Some botanicals are too delicate or low yielding to give a usable aroma through steam distillation alone. Absolutes make it possible to work with these complex, nuanced scents in blends, adding depth, richness, and long lasting character that is hard to achieve with essential oils by themselves.
How an Absolute Is Made
Plant material, often flowers or resins, is first extracted with a solvent to create a waxy, aromatic concentrate called a concrete or similar intermediate. That concentrate is then washed with alcohol and filtered so that, when the alcohol evaporates, a thick, intensely fragrant liquid remains: the absolute.

How Sfumare Used This Concept
Sfumare uses absolutes sparingly, as precision tools for adding complexity and emotional tone to certain diffuser blends. When an absolute is chosen, it is for its ability to bring a vivid, textured facet to the aroma, helping the final blend feel more dimensional and expressive in the air.
