What Is a Resin Extract?
Definition
A resin extraction is the process of pulling aromatic and therapeutic compounds out of natural plant resins, such as frankincense or myrrh, into a usable liquid extract. It transforms solid or semi solid resin into a concentrated material that can be blended more easily into diffuser and aroma formulas.
Why It Matters
Many of the deepest, most meditative scents in perfumery and aromatherapy come from resins, but raw resin is difficult to work with directly in a diffuser blend. Resin extraction captures the rich, smoky, balsamic character of these materials in a form that can be measured, blended, and repeated with precision.
How Resin Extraction Works
In resin extraction, the raw resin tears or chunks are combined with a medium, such as a solvent, carrier, or steam, which draws out the aromatic molecules and other desirable components. The result might be an essential oil, a resinoid, an oleoresin, or an infused extract, depending on the method and the goal for texture and solubility.
Examples
Extracting frankincense resin into an essential oil by steam distillation.
Creating a myrrh oleoresin using a solvent based extraction.
Infusing resin into a carrier oil to capture its aromatic and supportive compounds.

How Sfumare Uses This Concept
Sfumare treats resin extractions as building blocks for deep, atmospheric diffuser blends that need smoke, warmth, and grounding. By working with carefully chosen resin extracts instead of raw resin, Sfumare can control strength, blend them cleanly with other essential oils, and create stable, repeatable formulas that feel ancient, resinous, and modern in the air.
