What Is a CO2 Extract?
Definition
A CO2 extraction is a method of pulling aromatic and other plant compounds out of botanicals using pressurized carbon dioxide instead of heat based distillation or traditional solvents. When CO2 is pushed into a special high pressure state, it behaves like a liquid and can dissolve the plant’s aroma, then return to a gas and leave the extract behind.
Why It Matters
CO2 extraction captures a very complete, often more “true to the plant” aroma, including some heavier components that steam distillation can miss. Because carbon dioxide leaves no solvent residue and works at relatively low temperatures, the resulting extract can be very pure, rich, and gentle on heat sensitive constituents.
How CO2 Extraction Works
Plant material is placed into a sealed vessel and carbon dioxide is pressurized until it enters a supercritical or near liquid state. In that state, the CO2 moves through the plant material, dissolving aromatic and other target compounds, then the pressure is released so the CO2 turns back into a gas and separates, leaving a concentrated CO2 extract.
Examples
A CO2 extract of frankincense that smells deep and resinous with added richness compared to a distilled oil.
A CO2 extract of calendula or chamomile that contains both aromatic compounds and soothing lipids.
A CO2 extract of spice or citrus that feels dense, rounded, and vivid in blends.

How Sfumare Uses This Concept
Sfumare considers CO2 extracts when a blend needs extra depth, nuance, or a closer to plant profile than a standard essential oil can offer. When used, CO2 extracts are chosen carefully and woven into diffuser blends to add dimension and texture while still keeping the experience smooth and atmospheric in the air.
