How are Essential Oils made?

Definition

Essential oils are made by separating a plant’s aromatic compounds from its physical material using extraction methods. These methods pull the volatile scent molecules out of flowers, leaves, peels, woods, seeds, roots, or resins and concentrate them into a usable aromatic oil.

Main Extraction Methods

The three primary ways essential oils are made are steam based distillation, cold pressing, and solvent or CO2 based methods. Each method is chosen to match the plant part, its sensitivity to heat, and the qualities desired in the final oil.

Steam Distillation

In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still and hot steam passes through it, breaking open tiny oil sacs and carrying the aromatic molecules into a cooling coil. As the vapor cools, it condenses into liquid and separates into a layer of essential oil and a layer of aromatic water, or hydrosol.

Cold Pressing

Cold pressing, also called expression, is most often used for citrus peels. The rind is mechanically pressed or scraped so the oil glands burst and release their aromatic content, which is then collected and separated from any juice or water to become a citrus essential oil.

Solvent and CO2 Based Methods

Some plants do not give a usable aroma through distillation alone, so solvent extraction or CO2 extraction is used. These methods dissolve aromatic compounds into a solvent or pressurized CO2, then remove the solvent or release the pressure so a concentrated aromatic extract remains, such as an absolute or CO2 extract.

Examples

Lavender essential oil produced by steam distillation of lavender tops.
Sweet orange essential oil produced by cold pressing the orange peel.
Jasmine absolute produced by solvent extraction of jasmine blossoms.
Frankincense CO2 extract produced by CO2 extraction of frankincense resin.

How Sfumare Uses This Concept

Sfumare pays attention to how each oil was made when selecting materials for diffuser blends, choosing methods that best preserve the plant’s natural character and perform beautifully in the air. Understanding extraction allows Sfumare to combine steam distilled oils, cold pressed citrus, and occasional absolutes or CO2 extracts into blends that feel refined, stable, and emotionally expressive in real space.
