What Is Extraction Method?
Definition
Extraction method is the specific process used to pull aromatic compounds out of plant material to create an essential oil or related extract. It describes how the scent molecules move from the plant into a concentrated, usable form.
Why It Matters
Different extraction methods can bring out different facets of the same plant, changing the scent, strength, and composition of the final oil. Knowing the method helps you understand how close the aroma is to the living plant, how gentle the process was, and how the material is likely to behave in a diffuser blend.
Common Extraction Methods
Steam distillation uses heated steam to lift volatile aromatics from plants and condense them into essential oil and hydrosol. Cold pressing mechanically presses citrus peels to release their oils without added heat, while solvent or CO2 methods dissolve aromatics into a medium and then leave a concentrated extract behind.
Examples
Lavender essential oil made by steam distillation of lavender tops.
Lemon essential oil made by cold pressing the peel.
Rose absolute or CO2 extract made using solvent or CO2 based extraction.

How Sfumare Uses This Concept
Sfumare reads the extraction method as part of every ingredient’s profile when building diffuser blends. By pairing the right methods with the right plants, Sfumare chooses materials that smell vivid, diffuse smoothly, and support the emotional and atmospheric roles each blend is designed to play.
