What Affects Oil Quality?
What Affects Oil Quality?
Definition
Oil quality is shaped by everything that happens from plant to bottle, including how the plant is grown, harvested, extracted, handled, and stored. Small shifts at any stage can change an essential oil’s scent, strength, and reliability in a blend.
Plant and Environment Factors
Soil, climate, altitude, and sunlight all influence how a plant builds its aromatic chemistry and therefore the character of its oil. Plant variety, health, and farming practices, including how heavily chemicals are used, also affect how clean, complex, and true to plant the final oil will be.
Harvest and Extraction Choices
Harvest timing, such as season and even time of day, can change both yield and the balance of key aromatic molecules. Extraction methods and parameters, like temperature, pressure, and run length, must be tuned so the plant is fully expressed without burning, flattening, or stripping delicate notes.
Purity, Handling, and Storage
Purity can be lowered when oils are stretched with cheaper oils, synthetics, or unidentified carriers, which can distort both scent and behavior in the diffuser. Once an oil is made, exposure to excess heat, light, oxygen, or moisture speeds up aging, dulls brightness, and can introduce off notes over time.

How Sfumare Thinks About Quality
Sfumare looks at origin, extraction method, and handling when choosing every oil, favoring materials that are both aromatically beautiful and technically stable. By respecting each step that affects quality, Sfumare builds diffuser blends that smell consistent, diffuse cleanly, and feel refined and intentional in real space.
